This puzzle uses helical pieces (the sphere centers lie along a helix!), which would be extremely difficult to make accurately out of wood. It is a perfect puzzle for 3D plastic printing, because the pieces can be made very accurately, and assembly requires a little bit of flexibility. Assembly is very confusing due to the 3D nature of the pieces, it is helpful to have an assembled puzzle on hand to see the target shape.

A slight variation of the design can be assembled out of rigid pieces and has been 3D printed out of stainless steel. The metal variant can only be assembled using coordinate motion.
