Recent Downtime

I apologise for the problems we've been having recently. Apparently the hosts have some server issues, which, along with this site's (and a few others) "high database" usage, caused the server to die.

The good news is that Puzzle Place should now be back up and running fully. However, due to the continued issues we've been having with the current hosts, I've decided that it's time to try somewhere new. Therefore, I expect that there may be some more disruption at some point this week as things are migrated. Hopefully it won't last long if there is downtime.

Apologies (again) for the outage today, I hoped I could get this sorted without having the site die... my bad.
Anyway, this page is now being served by our new hosts! Yay! Hopefully things will run smoother from now on :D

Happy Puzzling!

That's a quick change from hoster!

No contract issues with the former website hosting company?

It's great that the change went so smooth; I remember the switch of hosting company at twistypuzzles.com, which caused a lot of delay to have the site fully live again due to the masses of pictures/files in its database.

I hope the new hosting company is not causing any financial disadvantages.

Indeed. It was far less painful that I was expecting and all went through very quickly thanks to the help I had from the new hosts (Mythic Beasts).

I paid for the hosting a year at a time with the old host and permit cancellation at any time. I'm tempted not to cancel the old hosting though and just use the space as a personal ftp since I've already paid for it and I don't think I'll be getting any kind of refund.

As for the transfer itself... Mythic Beasts setup a hosting account yesterday morning, by lunchtime I had copied the databases over, by the afternoon all the files were done too. By the evening the .co.uk domain registrar details were transferred and the .com was pointing to the right place. Then was an hour of total outage due to some incorrect DNS settings. Currently, we're still waiting for the .com registrar details to change over, but other that that, it's all done - in less than 14 hours! The new host charge about twice that of the old, but there's far more flexibility in the setup, it's *much* easier to backup, they have php modules that mean the wiki can use better caching methods, and they seem far more technically knowledgeable about the setup we use... so I'm pretty pleased, and it's only the cost of a puzzle or two anyway ;) Oh, and is it just me or do things feel a little faster to load now?

I agree with Allard! I want to help pay to maintain this. We can sort it at the next MPP Chris and you can't say 'No' ;)
