Oli's Packing Puzzle
Oli's Packing Puzzle
So yesterday I was messing around with BurrTools and quite by accident I created a 9x10 tray packing puzzle utilising 8 pieces and has only one correct assembly.
The prototype has been made out of Lego (don't judge me...it works!) and now I'm seeing if I can get it made out of wood or 3D printed.
I'll update more when I make some progress.

Well there's a bit of luck for you! I can't wait to see it!
Re: Oli's Packing Puzzle
Very lucky indeed! As soon as I have a prototype worthy of testing then I'd definitely like you and a couple of others to take a look at it. I can't judge the difficulty myself, and it would be great to find out if it's a worthwhile puzzle or not.bluesign2k wrote:Well there's a bit of luck for you! I can't wait to see it!

Re: Oli's Packing Puzzle
Send me the Lego plans, or the burr tools model if you want me to build the Lego plans for you and I'll try it out.

I have built a prototype out of Lego, but it's a bit rough around the edges.TheJuggler wrote:Send me the Lego plans, or the burr tools model if you want me to build the Lego plans for you and I'll try it out.
I'm going to try a basic wood prototype with beveled edges to allow smoother movement, then hopefully that'll make it more user puzzler friendly.
I need to buy a Dremel now...

Hi Oli,
Here's a piece of advice. Depending on what you're doing, don't buy a dremel! You'd be better off buying a router. Even a fairly cheap router will in the long run be better than a dremel.
I bought the most powerful dremel I could here in the US, and it's not a patch on the one I had in the UK, but also no dremel will have the power of a router for wood working. If you want some thoughts or advice let me know. I'm assuming that the dremel was to bevel the edges of the pieces, but that's a pretty big assumption on my part

Your pretty big assumption is pretty much spot on.
Do you have any suggestions on what I should go for? I'm pretty clueless in this field. I'm very unlikely to need anything major, all I'll need to do is cut, shape and bevel relatively soft woods.

Oli I think you may need to pop over to mine for a day.
We will give it a go with my tools if you like.
I agree with Neil, a dremel is not the the way forward.

Push, pull, twist, slide...........open!

Sounds like a plan!Alimorris wrote:Oli I think you may need to pop over to mine for a day.

I'm currently playing around with an oscillating saw to see how I get on. It's promising but I need a lot more practice with it to get nice cuts.

Okay, what happened to this project?
And easier to chamfer the edges with a hand plane.
