My trick lock puzzle project
Just a short announcement I've (for now) finished my drawing work on a new puzzle. A trick lock. And ordered a print at Shapeways to be able to create a prototype.
Exciting: the parts will be in by 20. February. And then I hope to learn if all works well and is fun to solve. (I think for the latter I need Louis' expert opinion again...)

Excellent! I'm always excited to see a new puzzle lock design. Are you going to aim towards printing it in metal if all goes well?
Louis is definitely a good guy to have the opinion of. Don't be discouraged if he solves anything too quickly though, the guy is a well above average puzzle solver!

Re: My trick lock puzzle project
My order already consists of some metal parts (to check if the tolerances and such are OK). But I will not print it in metal fully. Far too expensive, and the lock would be even more bulky due to the 3mm wall requirement for metal print.
I'm aiming to nickel plate the outer parts. There's a company nearby that probably can do nickel plating on 3D printed plastic, but we have to test it. And I've to learn pricing for this treatment. Keep you updated.

Re: My trick lock puzzle project
Well, this project has a (small I hope) delay:
I ordered coloured parts from Shapeways, and it turned out they only colour parts in their New York facilities.
And there they intially rejected the model "due to the many surfaces to colour".
The Dutch office agreed with me this rejection makes no sense, so my order is now back on track but with a delay alas.
If you have experience with Shapeways: I noticed (and also others) that Shapeways' policies are becoming more strict. To prevent crashing printers at Shapeways (and the costs when crashing) and also they don't want to disappoint people with prints that are not fully OK (not fully coloured, too heavy print stepping lines etc.). But on the other hand they are now entering the area of disappointing people by rejecting models. Even models similar to earlier versions that were printed without hesitation.....
Regarding the key: well, it should be in the print. I certainly will look for it when my order arrives.

Re: My trick lock puzzle project
Latest update:
There were some considerations from the side of Shapeways regarding polishing and coloring some smaller parts of my puzzle. So I've decided to first test the printing with a prototype in WSF (White Strong & Flexible; Shapeways' indication for white PA66 (nylon) sintered powder).
I'll collect my package when visiting their Eindhoven factory on 8. March.
You can be there too! (now 4 spots left for this factory tour)

Re: My trick lock puzzle project
Louis and I (and unknown others) had a good visit at the Shapeways factory in Eindhoven.
I received my ordered print, and could prevent Louis from taking a sneak peek
I just finished making some slight tunings to the model and thought it is time for an update with photos. Although I will make some small modifications, I'm happy with the result: it works!
As a lock at least. As a puzzle will be tested (after some modification)....
Some aspects regarding this lock:
- it has two keyholes (that nobody remarked this from the first drawing!)
- it has two keys
- it does not rattle much or has noticeable play (so the lock is not giving away its secrets easily I think)
And I'll not answer any questions regarding mechanism / solution
