Triangular sticks

Post by TheJuggler » May 30th, 2013, 3:31 pm

I've been looking at making a few triangular sticks. Seems that there's no-one out there really playing with triangular sticks, and there's a few puzzles that I'd love to add to my collection that use triangular sticks. In the coming *insert time here as its always longer than we think* I'll be making some puzzles for my collection such as a Jupiter, and wondered what the interest in that sort of puzzle might be ...

I'd be interested in a copy of Jupiter. It'd go nicely with the copy of Scorpius I got from Arteludes a while back :)

I think a good few would be very interested, myself included! I've always found triangular stick puzzles to look pretty impressive, especially those of a larger piece count like Jupiter.

So assuming I do make a Jupiter .... would people prefer the simple Jupiter, more complicated Saturn, or darn right dastardly Sphinx?

Once I have one made, it can be used as a jig for making the others ...

Not one to wimp out at a challenge, I'd go for a Sphinx :D

One example that was mentioned and is on the Wiki is STC's Jupiter.

Hi,
The best example of triangular sticks is given by the Kosticks creations : http://www.kosticks.com/magnetic-assemblies.html
Their geometric assemblies are purely made of triangular sticks.

Puzzles based on triangular sticks are described in Stewart Coffin's book, that you can read online : http://johnrausch.com/PuzzlingWorld/chap08.htm

Two famous ones are the Scorpius, and the Jupiter :
http://www.puzzle-place.com/wiki/Scorpius
http://www.puzzle-place.com/wiki/Jupiter

They are easy and beautiful puzzles made of identical pieces.

The Scambled Scorpius is an asymetric and difficult version of the Scorpius.

The Sphinx is an asymetric, difficult version of the Jupiter :
http://johnrausch.com/PuzzleWorld/toc.a ... sphinx.htm

The Saturn was a first step in making a Sphinx, but it is has some identical pieces :

Ahh now I see. Thanks for the info guys.

I've only played with Allard's Three Layer Tetraxis Array from Kostick, at MPP9, which was brilliant. If only I could afford one :(
