Thanks for the write up. Looks like it was an great puzzle party!

I'm glad that the Pentapod was of interest. I had a lot of fun designing and building it. If anyone does feel like taking on the challenge of building one in wood or metal do get in touch!

I think you are right matchbox puzzles are essentially puzzle boxes with matches in them.

Originally the matchboxes were known as Vesta Cases (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vesta_case).

A search on "puzzle Vesta" or "trick vesta" turns up numerous examples.

As Oskar says, the following puzzles were designed in the Netherlands, sliced in the US and built in the UK. Neat!
